Today, Callie & I were a part of a press conference from Phoenix Children's Hospital. The subject is children and vehicle safety. I little piece will be on the 4:00 5:00 & 6:00 news tonight in case anyone is interested in seeing it.

Good News!!!

First off, my apologies for not keeping up on this blog! I've had a block...

Earlier this year, we were given the news that "they" had decided not to open Callie's left eyelid, stating that the risks would outweigh the benefits! This meant that Callie WOULD, if she hadn't already, lose the vision of the left eye eventually! Very hard news to take, which I had still not accepted.

Just last week she had a routine visit to her opthamologist. She will be wearing glasses, which Ashley is picking up today, and the idea of surgically suspending her left lid was brought up again!!! The doctor was suggesting that this might require a cornea transplant, so we took Callie to her cornea specialist the next morning. He said that he is very very pleased with the way her cornea looks and that she will not be needing a cornea transplant at this time and that he saw now reason why she should not be able to have a partial lid suspension!!! We have yet to hear the final word from her opthamologist, but Callie does have an appointment with the surgeon in September to set up one or both of the surgeries.

Also, another surgery will be set up to work with the two out of six muscles that work in her right eye to help her to be able to track inwards, where now she can track almost to midline and out. This will make it to where she doesn't have to turn her head to see straight ahead of herself.

I'm not a fan of having my baby undergo surgery, but I am excited about the good that can come from them for her in the long run!

BIG NEWS!!!!!

WOW!!!
We are SOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!
Recently Callie has been forming up to 3-4 word sentences
as regular conversation for her :) which is a BIG thing for her!
Then this morning she zipped up her pajamas after a diaper change!!! Yeah for her!
The BIGGEST news of the day has been over 1 year in coming. At the appt week before last, her Neurologist had not talked about the possibility of regaining the damaged nerve function, which we have previously thought was the 3rd & 7th nerve, and recently learned that she is also lacking 5th nerve function.
She has been to an Institute one time so far (Gifford Health Institute in Gilbert AZ run by Dr. Kevin Gifford), where they do therapy targeted to stimulate nerves that lack proper function. We have been doing some of the therapy here at home. We hope to get her back soon & frequent. She has also been receiving electrical facial stimulation to the left side of her face aimed to stimulate the damaged nerves, and hopefully "Wake up" the left side of her face! She pats her left cheek and says "Wake up Face!", she also says "tickle" when they apply the devises & sometimes clamps her little hand tight to her cheek & will NOT allow them to apply their "tickle tortuous" devices until bribed with a sucker! (the dum dum or tootsie variety :)

So, for the big news.... this morning she coughed, and her left eye squinched down tight every time she coughed and we have been noticing all morning how she is having general MOVEMENT on the left side of her face!!!!
It isn't in balance with the right side yet, but it is a very GREAT beginning!!!! and we are OH SOOOOO HAPPY about it!!!

Na Na Na Na!

This morning Callie was in her high chair eating breakfast! Jeff & I were talking about high school football, when she had all she wanted, she stood up & sang so clearly, "na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey hey!" She cracks me up! That must be what she remebered from the football game on Friday!
I guess I'll take a minute to brag on the boys... Marcus & Burke are, both playing this year, Marcus as OT & kick off team & Burke plays center & defensive linebacker & kick off team. They also are both #56 (makes it easy on me :) & both of their teams are undefeated so far this season! I'm really enjoy football season :)
Anyway, Callie was just too cute this morning to not share!

I know it has been such a long time since I have posted... We have been having a wonderful summer! Callie is doing so well & is making so much progress. Even though she still has challenges with her left eye, we continue to hold out hope for it one day to be a "thing of the past". We love you and continue to be blessed by each of you in our lives. Life is so precious! May you all have a wonderful summer and may your lives be blessed in every way!!!!

therapy ~ first & last

We are so happy, we had to let you all know that tomorrow will be Callie's first day of Speech Therapy since she got out of PCH!
We have been waiting a long time for this day & are so happy about it.
The therapist that will be working with her, is also very happy to be working with Callie. She called after doing Callie's evaluation & told me how pleasant it was to meet Callie!

We are also extremely saddened... one of Callie's Physical Therapists here at home, recently learned that she had very progressed cancer
& passed away the day before yesterday.
I have posted the last picture I took of the two of them together
(Callie has been randomly calling out her name).
At the time I took the picture,
I was so surprised by the sunlight spilling in over the two of them...
I wondered what made the picture so special & now I know...
Dotty, you will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
We love you so much &

i'm trying to overcome my blogging block...
i don't know if it's post traumatic stress or what...
i just had to tell about my little yoga baby cal...
she loves to do yoga with any of us when we do it...
she is soooooo flexible... it's sooooooo cute
anyway, one of the kids did an hour of yoga the other night
and callie did it with him for at least half of that!!!
she does some of the same poses & some all her own
so cute!

tomorrow will be callie's very first speech evaluation since she came home.
hopefully she will be getting speech therapy very soon.

also, yesterday at chuch, callie RAN down the aisle at church.
more & more she is just being a regular 2 year old. yeah!

i hope you are all doing well. i still think of all that everyone has done for us & it moves me to tears (as i am now) i know i haven't given the proper thanks & i want to, but i want all of you to know how much we love & appreciate EVERYTHING! so many AMAZING people!!!

This weekend was an especially enjoyable one. Our oldest son, his wife & baby came up for a visit & we celebrated Elsie's 15th birthday! We were able to see all the kids & grandkids!!! (except Micah) We love to spend time with our family & had such a great time that it completely escaped me to get pictures! :( Callie loves her nephews & loves to see her brothers & sisters. She has been changed from one insurance to another, that is for longer term (till she is 6 & evaluated to see if they will keep her on) She is making good progress still. We hope to get her into the Cornea specialist soon! We're hoping that the cornea is looking better than the last time he looked at it!
We had a very nice Easter & hope that you all did as well.

For quite some time, I have been wanting to share a picture with you
of my Christmas gift from our oldest daughter Ashley & her family.
It is one of the most thoughtful gifts I have ever received & I love it.
She is such a very thoughtful & awesome daughter! I can only hope to be a little like her when I grow up!!!

Callie's Benefit Concert was such a great time! It was so nice to get together with everyone & have fun (instead of gathering at the hospital).
My nephew Collin Freestone, a group called The Alston's & another Just Us all performed. There was a wide range of music, including (but not limited to) classic rock, country & reggae. The whole night was great entertainment.
Collin sang She's Some Kind of Wonderful (and many others, including some originals), which I felt was so fitting. I'm sure that I can find plenty of witnesses that Cal is "some kind of wonderful". I wanted to scoop her up & take her up on the stage during the song!
The whole thing was set up by my Uncle Rick Dalton & cousin Erika Dalton! We're so grateful to EVERYONE who made it happen! Thank you very much!!! Callie had an absolute blast! Another we must mention is Shanna (a faithful blog watcher) from Utah. She made the adorable dress Callie was wearing just for the occasion! She makes & sells these for a business & can be found at

Callie absolutely loved the dress & at the end of the night, didn't want us to take it off of her! Thank you sooooo much Shanna!!! She really felt special, somehow she seemed to figure out that it was all about her! She seemed to respond to all the performers as if on queue & could be seen snapping her fingers, dancing & clapping throughout the whole evening.
The event was attended by many friends & family, including one of our favorites from PCH (another faithful blog watcher), and was enjoyed by young & old! Thank you all for your attendance! We love & appreciate you all.
Callie loved dancing & partying with everyone, they even played the Cha Cha Slide (which Callie loves) & lots of people danced with her between groups.
When it was all over, she was tired out, but still wouldn't give it up for over an hour more!

This a picture of Callie with one of her physical therapists (yesterday)!
She is making so much progress!
As you can see, she is learning to stand on one foot & very aggressive about it!
Just today her occupational therapist was so excited about all the progress Callie has made just since the last time she saw her a week ago! Callie had her amazed the whole time!
We are all looking forward to seeing you all at the concert this weekend.
I think that Callie will have such a great time. I just think it will be great to be able to see everyone not in the hospital!!!

Last week at Callie's eye Dr. appt, he gave basically no hope
of her ever having the use of her left eye.
While that may be the case, I still feel that we need to try to do whatever we can to save it.
Her therapist says that she does differently than other children she has worked with that are blind in one eye. So if any of you have any suggestions, we are open to hear them!
We are grateful to all that is being done to make this concert happen. It will be covered by Channel 15 News I hear!

Excitement!!!

I took this picture to day at therapy. Callie was playing tug of war with her occupational therapist. She had just actually made a real smile just before I took this picture! It made me cry. I tried to make it bigger, but couldn't figure it out. Look how her mouth is more symmetrical & if you could see better, you can actually see white & iris in her left eye!!!
Three times in the last week, she has felt us put ointment in her left eye!!! Woo Hoo!
I'm blown away.
Thank you soooooo much for all of your concern, thoughts, faith & prayers on Callie's behalf! We are sooooo blessed & SOOOOOO Grateful!

We celebrated Callie's happy birthday and had so much fun doing it! Thank you so much to everyone who joined us and of course to all of those who sent birthday wishes her way.

We feel so incredibly blessed to have been able to celebrate her life and her SECOND birthday WITH HER in our arms!

I don't think there are any words that could possibly describe the feeling of gratitude and joy our family feels for this precious miracle girl we have been blessed with.

A Very Hard Recovery

The procedure that Callie underwent on Wednesday was to have her eyes opened up. It is done in a way that it can be reversed and basically it makes it to where her eyes are open all the time. Eventually they should settle and she'll be able to get them mostly closed.

For now however it is frustrating to her. When she is tired she tries to get her hands on them to force them closed. And all through the day it is a challenge to keep her from scratching and grabbing at them. Because they won't close on her own, she can't blink. This means she has to have ointment put in her eyes every hour to keep them moisturized. Another thing that she's not so pleased about.

We are praying and fasting that she will start to find this easier to deal with. Please continue to keep Callie in your prayers.

With Eyes Wide Open

Callie's surgery went very well this morning. In fact she is already back home!
Her right eye looks awesome! You can tell that she can see so much better...and easier. It's sure nice to see those pretty eyes again. Her left eye wasn't opened quite as wide as the right because there is still a lot of healing to be done. You can see her retinal damage now and see just how good she has scratched her little eye.
We look forward to her continued healing and know that she will make good use of her "new" eyes! I will wait to post a picture until her eyes and the incisions have had a little more time to heal.

Surgery Day

By the time most of you read this, Callie will probably have already entered the surgery room. The procedure is scheduled to begin at 6:30 in the morning and last around two hours.

Please keep her in your prayers.

We pray that the surgeons will blessed as they work on her and that the procedure will bring about positive changes for our little California.

Her eyes will be "shockingly open" for the first few weeks but will gradually find a more natural position. She will definitely be wide eyed this Christmas! :)

There are so many positive things that can come from this surgery. Things that will benefit Callie and help her continue to progress in her rehabilitation therapy. We look forward to more great things for this special lady.

I will let you all know how the surgery goes.

Okay everyone! Today is the auction for the Photo Session With April Whiting Photography!

April Whiting Photography is based out of the White Mountains in Arizona. However if you are a valley resident, she will be in the Mesa area mid-December and would be happy to make arrangements to do a photo session at that time. This photo session will be one hour long and can be shot at up to two locations of your choice. You will also receive a CD with all of your photos.. I promise you they will be beautiful!

How this will work:

The starting bid will be $20. To make your bid, simply leave a comment. Bidding will continue until midnight tonight {Friday the 21st}.

PHOTO SESSION WITH APRIL WHITING PHOTOGRAPHY

Okay you guys, I am so excited! I've been talking with April, of April Whiting Photography and she would like to offer a photo session as a fundraiser to benefit "Kisses for Callie"!

This photo session will last one hour and can be shot at two locations of your choice. The auction will take place Friday, the 21st of November on this blog. {Just in time for your Christmas cards!}

April is located in Show Low, Arizona but will be in the Mesa area towards mid December and has offered to meet with the winner at that time. She takes beautiful pictures and she is just such a sweet person!

She has been so generous to offer her time and talents for this cause and we would love to see a great response. So let your family and friends know!

Thank you all for letting us be a part of the Kisses for Callie efforts! We will be happily handing this blog over to Callie's sister Ashley who will continue to do a wonderful job with Callie's fundraising efforts. We have one more thing to post before we say goodbye. We have a TON of visual aids, i.e. bulletin board / wall decorations for various educational themes that is fitting for 3rd - 5th grades. They are in excellent condition! They were graciously donated to the Kisses For Callie yard sale, but there was so much stuff there, and not an empty table to put them on, that I didn't want them to get ruined. I do not have a picture yet, but let me assure you, they're great! They are perfect for a teacher's classroom! We would like to send out a HUGE thank you to all of those that supported our yard sale for Callie. Whether it was through donations of items, money, cards, shopping at the sale, sending baked goods, helping out at the sale, or just saying your prayers, we would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!

We were surprised with a visit from Callie! That was the best thank you that anyone could've received. I can tell you first hand, that she gives a new meaning to butterfly kisses! She is such an angel baby!

Callie and her cousin Zach. He and his Cub Scout troop did an awesome job helping to organize the items. Great job boys!

Callie and her cousins Brittany and Zach. Callie loved playing "fetch" with the little dog. She would throw it and Zach would get it for her every time.

We were so blessed with a large amount of donations. Thank you all for your generosity.Everywhere Callie went, she had a huge following. She's a star! She is even walking with her mom's help! You go girl!
Even though I was grubby from the yard sale, Callie still showered me with kisses. This was the highlight of my day!

As much as we enjoyed the visit, it was time for Callie to return home to Show Low. We are so thankful for the surprise guys! It is truly a humbling feeling to be in her presence. We are getting some great donations for the yard sale that will be held on November 8th in Queen Creek. I am going to start putting some of the items on Craig's List before the yard sale date. After our first "Kisses for Callie" raffle several people contacted me to offer donations for "our next raffle". To be honest I wasn't planning on a second raffle. But we have had so many people asking if they could donate things for one that I have decided to plan another. I am not sure of the date yet but will let you all know when something is set. Some sweet family friends had the idea to circulate a donation jar for "Kisses for Callie" at last weekend's home Football game. So many generous people contributed and I just wanted to say Thank You to each of you! We continue to be amazed by all of the wonderful people in our community as well as all over the world! I have to send a big THANK YOU out to all of Callie's fans! You guys are awesome and really stepping up. We have received so many offers for donations and look forward to many more! Please remember that we have several volunteers in the White Mountains to collect your donations and bring them down to the valley for you! I am also happy to pick up your donations here in the East Valley as well. We are gathering some really cool items and services to be auctioned off too, however we are still graciously accepting more! I will have more concrete details as to the date and location of the yard sale that I will post some time this week. Thanks again and please remember to spread the word!

Good news! We have someone willing to bring donations down to the valley from the Show Low area, and she has even graciously offered to store them in her garage until she comes. She will be making the trek on Thursday, October 9th. If you are interested, please email your contact information to Lisa and Brittany at kissesforcallie@live.com and we'll get your information to her, and her information to you so you can coordinate getting your items to her! Hello Family, Friends and Friends to be! Welcome to "Kisses For Callie", a blog set up in honor of sweet little Callie Jayne Butler. To read her story visit her big sister Ashley's blog here.

Callie's cousin Brittany McNeil has an upcoming Evening of Excellence program with her church youth organization. As her value project she has chosen to organize and carry out a benefit yard sale with all proceeds benefiting Callie. This blog was designed to get the word out and "call all angels" in an effort to encourage them to clean out those closets and give to a worthy cause! The exact date, location and details are still being hammered out, however we will keep you posted.

For now, please gather up your items and contact Brittany or Lisa McNeil at mailto:mcneilfamilyof6@msn. We will make arrangements to pick up your items, or if you can drop them off that is also terrific! Monetary donations are also gladly excepted. While many of you may live in the White Mountains, please remember that this sale will be held sometime in late October, so if you are anyone that you know will be traveling down to the valley before them, please send your items with them!!!

If anyone has any new items that they would like to donate for an online auction, please let us know as well!

Please post this link on your blogs and send out emails to everyone that you know. We want this to spread like wildfire! The more donations we receive, the more we can help relieve the financial burden being felt by her family at this time, which is the last thing that we want them to worry about.

Callie's Story

Callie Jayne Butler is a beautiful little girl from Show Low, Arizona. She is the youngest in a family of 15! She was born to be an independent spirit and loves to go about her day doing all the things she loves!

On September 8th, 2008 little Callie Jayne {then 19 months old} was tragically backed up over by a family friend in her parent's driveway. Callie was rushed to the local hospital and from there she was air-evacced to Phoenix Children's Hospital. The outlook from the doctors was grim. Callie's head had endured all the pressure of the SUV as it backed up over her tiny body. She had multiple skull fractures, a blood clot and air bubbles on her brain.

She underwent emergency surgery to repair as much damage as possible. Callie remained comatose for weeks. Her family never gave up hope for her. They knew the strength that little Callie possessed and her love and vigor for life. They also have a very strong faith in their Heavenly Father and His ability to work miracles in the lives of those who believe in Him.

This blog was created to support and follow Callie through her amazing recovery.
